The SSC Ultimate Aero is an American-built mid-engine supercar by Shelby SuperCars. Its higher-performance limited production version, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, is the fastest production car in the world, with a recorded speed of 256.18 mph (412.28 km/h). This speed was achieved during tests on September 13, 2007 in West Richland, Washington, United States and verified by Guinness World Records on October 9, 2007.
The Aero and the Shelby SuperCars company are the brainchildren of Jerod Shelby (no relation to car designer Carroll Shelby), who started out building exotic “replicars” including a Fiero-based Ferrari F355 replica and a Lamborghini Diablo replica based on a spaceframe which later was used in the Ultimate Aero prototype. Jerod later moved from building replicas to designing the first true Supercar and after seven years it finally began to take shape. Although the basic Aero model is no longer produced, the Ultimate Aero is still in production with an MSRP of around $654,400.
This distinctive two-door car was designed for BMC by Sir Alec Issigonis. It was manufactured at the Longbridge and Cowley plants in England, the Victoria Park / Zetland British Motor Corporation (Australia) factory in Sydney, Australia, and later also in Spain, Belgium, Chile, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, Uruguay, Venezuela and Yugoslavia. The Mini Mark I had three major UK updates: the Mark II, the Clubman and the Mark III. Within these was a series of variations including an estate car, a pickup truck, a van and the Mini Moke—a jeep-like buggy. The Mini Cooper and Cooper “S” were sportier versions that were successful as rally cars, winning the Monte Carlo Rally four times from 1964 through to 1967, although in 1966 the Mini was disqualified after the finish, along with six other British entrants, which included the first four cars to finish, under a questionable ruling that the cars had used an illegal combination of headlamps and spotlights. Initially Minis were marketed under the Austin and Morris names, as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini Minor, until Mini became a marque in its own right in 1969. The Mini was again marketed under the Austin name in the 1980s.
The Tipo F133F 6.0 L V12 engine produces a maximum 620 PS making it the most powerful series production Ferrari road car. Its 608 N·m (448 ft·lbf) of torque will also be a high for Ferrari’s GT cars. Most of the modifications to the engine were done to allow it to fit in the Fiorano’s engine bay (the original Enzo version could be taller as it would not block forward vision due to its mid-mounted position). The company claims a top speed in excess of 332 km/h (206 mph), 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds, and 10.3 seconds to 200 km/h (124 mph).
The car uses some technology developed from the Enzo, and combines it with some new developments from Ferrari and its suppliers. However, the car is only a part of the overall program. Customers pay $2.5 million, but are only allowed to drive the car on special track days which are approved by Ferrari. After they drive the car, the owners are entitled to brief Ferrari on the car’s performance. Ferrari’s sister company, Maserati, has developed a similar car, the MC12 Corsa.
An evolution of the Enzo, in essence, the FXX shares some components with the original car, but numerous, significant developments are unique to the FXX.
